Happy Summer!
We just got back last night from a little vacation at my parent’s house in Mesquite, NV. I spent most of the time perfecting my handstand on the bottom of their pool – it was over 100 there almost everyday we were there! But, I did get some reading in – and my Kindle swimsuit was perfect for in-the-pool reading!

I received an email for Netgalley.com a couple of weeks ago. This great site allows you to request galleys from publishers and then read them on your Kindle or computer. I just finished the first book I requested – and loved it. What a great resource for reviewers and publishers. Check it out!

Books Finished Last Week:
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer. This is a fun book to read by the pool or beach – very interesting. Make sure to check out my review.
Wildthorn by Jane Eagland. This was my first Netgalley book – and I loved it. Look for my review this week.
Currently Reading:
The Lonely Tree by Yael Politis. I didn’t read this too much on vacation – but am going to jump back in this week and finish it.
Reading Next:
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. I haven’t gotten to this yet – but am hoping to this week.
Let me know what you are reading!

Things have been crazy for me this last week – so I’m behind on not only my reading but in my Monday postings as well!
Books Finished in the Last 2 Weeks:
Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. Loved this! Check out my reading map and review.
The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. This was a recommend from Caroline Bookbinder and the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. It was a fun read, a little slower than I expected, but would be perfect for a teen looking for a light summer read.
The Silver Swan by Benjamin Black. I have to admit, I was walking through the grocery store last week and they had a book big full of hardbacks – 2 for $10. I had recently seen something about Benjamin Black (this is a pseudonym for Booker Prize winner John Banville) and was curious, so I picked this up. I dived into it without realizing it’s the second in the Quirke series – but it didn’t affect the reading at all. I loved it – and am looking forward to reading more by Black. Sometimes a good deal is a good deal!
Currently Reading:
The Lonely Tree by Yael Politis. This is the first book I have accepted from a publisher for review. I received an email from Holland Park Press and the premise of a Jewish family living during Israel’s struggle for independence sounded very interesting. I don’t know much about this era/subject, so I jumped at the chance to learn more. I think this will be a great one to create a reading map for.
Reading Next:
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin. I have wanted to read this for a while (it’s mentioned quite a few times in my teen journal), but I have been spurned on by Heather P.’s review on Books and Quilts.

Books Finished Last Week:
Half a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Wow – this was an amazing epic. I am posting an awesome post about this book tomorrow – make sure to check back!
Currently Reading:
Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. Loving this so far – Flavia is the cutest heroine I’ve read about in a long time. I might be hooked on her mysteries.
Reading Next:
I read a great review of this at Caroline Bookbinder, popped over to Paperbackswap to order it and already received my copy. Thanks Caroline for a fun recommend! I’m excited to dive in.
. After reading Half a Yellow Sun, I wanted to read Things Fall Apart while the Igbo people are still fresh in my mind. Things Fall Apart is the most widely known novel concerning the Biafran war and the Igbo people and has been on TBR pile forever!

I’ve missed a few days of blogging due to a tv appearance (scary! but turned out okay) and my last author signing event. But, things should slow down a bit now, so look for more posts and some new features from Bibliobabe!

Books Finished Last Week:
Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen.

A great read, similar in a lot of respects to Hatchet, although with a theme that is maybe a little dark for my Great Summer Reads series. Watch for my review!

The 19th Wife, by David Ebershoff.

Even though it’s a little late for Booking Through Thursday, I need to answer last week’s question (So … you’re halfway through a book and you’re hating it. It’s boring. It’s trite. It’s badly written. But … you’ve invested all this time to reading the first half. What do you do? Read the second half? Just to finish out the story? Find out what happens? Or, cut your losses and dump the second half?).
When I purchased The 19th Wife, I had no idea what it was about. This is a backlash on me – I NEVER read the back of a book. I don’t like to know too much about a book before I read it. I think that’s why I like award lists so much – it just takes a good recommendation and I will read any book.

I live in Utah and grew up here. I have been exposed my whole life to the unique culture, religion and history of the state on a daily basis. You know how you feel about turkey the fifth day in row you eat it as a leftover after Thanksgiving? That’s kind of how I feel about polygamy. It is such an important subject and one that definitely needs to be addressed, but locally (and even nationally at times), this story feels like too much turkey in a row for me. If I wasn’t from Utah, I think I would have found this a fascinating story and one I couldn’t put down -but as it was, I put it down after just one night of reading. It was a tiny bit hokey to me (again, I think only because I’m from here), with the made up name of the county, but the real county name (Kane) used as the last name of the jail officer, the lawyer’s last name (Heber) a VERY popular Mormon first name and also the name of a Utah town, the over-the-top descriptions of polygamy and backwardness of Mesadale. I think I am just to close to the subject to enjoy a fiction account of it. Does that make sense?

Again, I really do think the problems of polygamy need to be addressed and I also applaud Ebershoff for also introducing the theme of gays in religion (a big issue of course with most religions and one for which a member of the Mormon religion would be excommunicated). But, even after all of that, I had to move on.

Books Finished Last Week:
Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. I can’t believe I have never read any of Gary Paulsen’s books. He is so prolific and has won so many awards – what a treasure. I really enjoyed this and am excited to post a review – and to continue on with the series.
Plainsong, by Kent Haruf. My thoughts for Paulsen are mirrored with Haruf – I can’t believe I have waited so long to read anything by him. This too was a wonderful read. Watch for a review!
Currently Reading:
Shiver, by Maggie Stiefvater. Everyone is doing it! This book has gotten so much press that I couldn’t resist it – plus it’s the Bibliobabe Teen Free Book Giveaway for April. So far, so good…although I do wonder if the Meyer’s books hadn’t been written, would this?
The Mysterious Affair at Styles, by Agatha Christie. This is my first for the Agatha Christie Challenge. Very fun – although I’m listening to it on my Ipod. It may be a tad complicated for audio – I do better soaking in details when I read.
Reading Next:
A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle. I read this and loved it when I was younger and have been craving a reread. Hopefully it will be better the second time!
The River, by Gary Paulsen. I am very excited to read this – and maybe Brian’s Winter next – what a hooky series!

It’s Spring Break! I’m hoping to catch up on my reading this week. The Lacuna is an amazing and fascinating book and I’m happy to be reading something by Barbara Kingsolver again. She is one of my favorite authors – reading her books is like chatting with an old friend. Plainsong has been on my TBR pile for a long time – it will be good to give it try. I have read some great reviews of Haruf’s work, but this will be the first I’ve read.

For the second time in a couple of weeks, I thought I had books I posted here to read, and then when I went to find each of them on my shelf, they weren’t there. I could picture buying them and putting them on my shelf. Weird! So, I am waiting for Plainsong, by Kent Haruf to come in from Paperbackswap. I will have to keep looking for Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, by Alan Bradley – it has got to be here somewhere!

I picked up A Beautiful Death, by Charles Finch on a whim – I am in the mood for a mystery and it was an Agatha Award Nominee. To celebrate Lacuna winning the second match in the Tournament of Books, I am going to read it as well. I finished Little Bee last week (my review is below) as well as The God of Animals (LOVED IT! – watch for a review this week).
